Our Approach

Learning to swim is an individual journey.
Some people want to swim for family fun and safety reasons, others are looking to swim competitively. Orca customizes classes to meet the individual's goals. All instructors are well trained to teach students how their bodies float, move, and can swim safely in the water.

Teaching personal safety is the number one goal instructors have for all students.
Instructors also maintain current First Aid, CPR for the professional rescuer, and Lifeguard Training and have ongoing training with the National Swim School Association.

Children's program
Classes are taught privately (1:1 student teacher), semi-private (2:1), or small group (3:1). For student comfort, Orca conducts classes in warm water pools (88-90 degrees). Students first learn how to float on their back and stomach. This is the most important lesson. The more comfortable and knowledgeable a person is with the water and how they float then the safer they will be in any water situation. Once a person is comfortable in the water, students learn to swim on their back (for easy breathing) then a "roll over" stroke (that develops into front crawl). Competitive strokes, lifeguard skills and other advanced skills are taught next.

The same class time and instructor are yours as long as it remains a good match.
Classes meet once or twice a week depending on what the students needs. Sessions run monthly. After taking a placement test and being placed into a class of appropriate skill and age, you remain in that class for as long as you want. Orca sees the relationship between student and teacher as a very important connection, especially for the beginner and young swimmer. So, once you have a class time and instructor that seems a good match for you, it's yours for as long as you want and as long as you make monthly payments. Students generally progress at a similar rate; therefore, the instructor will continue to develop student skills within the same group. Changes in schedule occur when needed by the family, dramatic change in class skill level, or a change in Orca pool schedule. Orca works its best to make the class fit your schedule and needs of the student.
